The Panther Hunter brought international success to the young Danish sculptor Jens Adolf Jerichau (1816 Assens – 1883 Neder Draby) in 1846. After working for some time in Bertel Thorvaldsen’s studio in Italy, he created the original design for the Panther Hunter in Rome. The sculpture depicts an ancient figure of a hunter being attacked by a wild panther. The animal furiously tries to snatch the stolen cub from his arm. Classicist idealisation meets naturalistic representation here, bringing Jerichau fame and significance that continues to this day.
