Porphyry is a rare type of rock with a purple-red colour and large, clearly visible crystals. The Romans appreciated its aesthetic qualities and used it for works of art, columns, mosaics and decorations in buildings and palaces. A well-known example is the ‘Porphyry Sarcophagus of Emperor Constantine’. However, due to its rarity and the difficulty of quarrying and transporting it, the rock was mainly used for prestigious and important projects.
