Porphyrit ist ein seltener igneoser Gesteinstyp mit purpurroter Farbe und großen, gut sichtbaren Kristallen. Die Römer schätzten seine Ästhetik und Verwendeten es für Kunstwerke, Säulen, Mosaiken und Dekorationen in Gebäuden und Palästen. Ein bekanntes Beispiel ist der “Porphyrsarkophag des Kaisers Konstantin”. Aufgrund seiner Seltenheit und der Schwierigkeit des Abbaus und Transports wurde das Gestein jedoch hauptsächlich für repräsentative und bedeutende Projekte verwendet.

Porphyrite is a rare igneous type of rock with purple color and large, highly visible crystals. The Romans appreciated its aesthetics and used it for works of art, columns, mosaics and decorations in buildings and palaces. A famous example is the “Porphyry Sarcophagus of the Emperor Constantine”. However, due to its rarity and the difficulty of extraction and transportation, the stone was used mainly for representative and important projects.
