Four gilded candlesticks
Four gilded candlesticks
Fire-gilded bronze
France, circa 1820
27 cm high
A very beautiful and rare set of four candlesticks from the Charles X period. Fine chasing on the base and candle holder and guilloché column shaft. Richly decorated with acanthus leaves and other plant motifs. Very good condition with age-appropriate patina.
Gilded candlesticks were very common lighting elements in the early 19th century. The glow of the candles was reflected in the polished surfaces and bathed the room in a warm, golden light. They were usually placed close to the user. For example, there are gaming tables with four recesses in the corners for candlesticks. They were also often placed in pairs on mantelpieces or consoles. Larger sets of more than two candlesticks are rare.
