The beginnings of Roman wall paintings date back to the 4th century BC. In the early stages, mainly geometric patterns and simple ornaments were used.
The most famous Roman wall paintings are from Pompeii and Herculaneum, which were discovered in well-preserved condition during excavations. They show various motifs such as mythological scenes, landscapes, architecture and everyday scenes.
