Das Forum war das zentrale politische, wirtschaftliche und religiöse Zentrum von Pompeji. Im Forum befand sich die Basilika, ein bedeutendes, und mit 1500 Quadratmetern, das prächtigste Gebäude des Forums. In der römischen Antike bezeichnete der Begriff “Basilika” ein öffentliches Gebäude, das unter anderem als Gerichtsgebäude, Geschäfts- und Handelszentrum, sowie als Ort für öffentliche Versammlungen, genutzt wurde. Sie wird auf 130-120 v. Chr. datiert und ist eines der ältesten Beispiele für diese Art von Gebäuden in der gesamten römischen Welt.

The Forum was the central political, economic and religious center of Pompeii. In the Forum was the Basilica, an important, and with 1500 square meters, the most magnificent building of the Forum. In Roman antiquity, the term “basilica” referred to a public building used, among other things, as a courthouse, business and commercial center, and a place for public meetings. It is dated to 130-120 BC and is one of the oldest examples of this type of building in the entire Roman world.
