Die antiken Römer haben den Hocker oder “Schemel” als Möbelstück adaptiert und in vielfältigen Variationen weiterentwickelt. Diese reichten von Kreuzhockern über Trommelhocker bis hin zu Bronzehockern und Drechselbeinhockern. Ebenso bekannte Varianten waren Klapphocker sowie die sella curulis, auf der römische Magistrate Platz nahmen.

The ancient Romans adapted the stool or “footstool” as a piece of furniture and further developed it in many variations. These ranged from cross stools and drum stools to bronze stools and turned-leg stools. Equally well-known variants were folding stools as well as the sella curulis, on which Roman magistrates took their seats.
